How to Install Concrete Well Tiles in Your Pond

A Well Tile is a concrete cylinder primarily used for water collection and filtration. In Ontario, the most common placements on rural properties is in the corners of ponds, where the water is used for irrigation. Well tiles are typically between 2’ and 4’ in diameter and create a sediment free area for water pump intakes.

Common Uses of Well Tiles in Ontario

Using Well Tiles For Irrigation

The purpose of using well tiles in your pond for irrigation is to create a sediment free area for your pump to gather water. By combining well tiles with clear stone and clean backfill you can ensure that your irrigation system functions at its best and reduces the risk of debris entering your system.

Installation Recommendations For Irrigation Systems

  1. Select the location in your pond and excavate roughly 2’ deep where your well tile will be placed.
  2. Backfill this area with a combination of large stones, clear stone, and pea gravel. Allowing you to level your well tile while creating a filtration system where water enters your well tile through the stone.
  3. Place your well tile(s) on that spot and stack them until they exceed the maximum surface level of the pond.
  4. Add an additional layer of stone inside your well tile before placing your pump. Additional options below:
    • A large diameter culvert can be installed vertically inside your well tile to create a housing for your pump. The space between the culvert and the well tile can then be backfilled with stone.
    • The pump can be installed externally with the intake line secured at the bottom of the well tile.

Using Well Tiles to House a Fire Hydrant in Remote Areas

Your pond and well tile installation can also be used to create a fire hydrant system in hard-to-reach areas. You can use a similar installation setup as an irrigation system. This can help with property insurance costs, improve code compliance, and assist fire fighters during emergency situations. Linked here is an installation guideline to help explore that process.
