Using Ecoraster Ground Stabilization Grids for Roadways, Driveways, and Landscaping

In this blog we’re going to explore a variety of ways that municipalities, contractors, and landscapers throughout Ontario are using the Ecoraster E40 and Ecoraster E50 for their projects. Ecoraster Ground Stabilization Grids are permeable paving systems used for access roads, driveways, landscaping projects, and more.

Eglinton Crosstown LRT Maintenance Access Road

Challenge

Integrating a maintenance access road with a grassed appearance adjacent to a newly constructed light rail transit, ensuring it blends seamlessly with the surrounding park, while also preventing erosion and allowing for stormwater runoff infiltration.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, Metrolinx introduced Ecoraster E50 permeable pavement solution.

Project Overview

Metrolinx aimed to integrate an access road with grassed appearance adjacent to a newly constructed light rail transit but anticipated potential issues with rutting caused by maintenance vehicles. To address this, they utilized Ecoraster E50 due to its capacity to endure heavy vehicle loads and distribute tire point loads across the subbase. Additionally, the E50’s permeability allows efficient stormwater runoff infiltration, minimizing the need for site servicing structures.

The installation process was simplified by the E50’s modular design, making it straightforward to implement. The cells were filled with soil and seed. Ultimately, the entire feature resulted in a grass-like appearance with robust permeable reinforcement concealed beneath.

Benefits of Ecoraster E50 include:

  • Adaptable to cold climates: Ecoraster can withstand harsh environmental conditions, including snow plowing, ensuring year-round functionality.
  • Resistant to UV exposure and aggressive solvents.
  • Modular in design: simplifies installation and facilitates customization to suit project requirements.
  • Manufactured in Canada from recycled LDPE.
  • Promotes infiltration.
  • Minimizing water runoff and promoting groundwater recharge

Front Yard Landscaping in Listowel, ON

Challenge

The front yard was difficult to mow, weeds kept taking over, and the grass struggled to grow. Overall, the space became increasingly difficult to maintain and was visually unappealing.

Solution

The customer chose Ecoraster as a landscaping alternative. It provided a stable, low-maintenance surface that reduced weed growth, and created a clean, polished look for the yard.

Project Overview

  1. The client prepared the base by removing the top layer of sod and tree stumps.
  2. From there, the ground was raked and leveled. Since this project was mainly for aesthetic purposes and not for stormwater management, the client did not create a retention base.
  3. A single layer of permeable geotextile fabric was laid on directly on the ground to help mitigate the weeds and prevent the gravel from migrating into the ground.
  4. Once the fabric was down, the E30 grid was installed and filled with a ¼ inch clean angular stone
  5. Results: A low-maintenance, permeable front yard with improved curb appeal—no mowing required!
